Own an island
The ultimate escape
Maura Curley
No man may be an island- unless of course he owns one.
Richard Branson and Johnny Depp do, and you can too.
Throughout the region, there are still perfect parcels for sale.
From the Bahamas to Curacao and plenty of places in between you can still find islands
waiting to be sold to the highest bidder.
Some sellers are motivated, but it’s unlikely you can luck out like a younger Richard Branson did in the 1970’s when he purchased Necker Island in the British Virgins for about 0,000, a fraction if its asking price. But then Richard’s early negotiating skills had all the markings of a budding billionaire..
Still, you might want to consider Leaf Cay in the Bahamas, which has a protected marina, generators, government buildings and even a 1,500-foot airstrip.
No price is listed, so make an offer.
Vernon Island in Antigua has 22 acres of rocky terrains, wildlife and birds, though no beaches, power or running water. Asking price is million USD.
Isla de Cabras in the Dominican Republic is for sale at just million, for 59 acres near Puerto Plata.
Ronde Island in Grenada is thought to be the largest Caribbean island currently for sale.
It has 2,000 acres of hills, valleys, bays and beach and waterfront. Realtors tell prospective bidders, they are not buying an island, but more a small country they can control.
Asking price $100 million USD.
If buying an island outright doesn’t fit into your scheme, renting is also an option.
Take for example Sir Richard’s Necker neverland of 74 acres, billed as the “ultimate all inclusive private island tropical vacation.
Necker is haven for royalty, rock stars and movie moguls.
Rental rates begin at $25,000 for a seven day dalliance.
