Tiny Anguilla scores big at Caribbean culinary competition

Anguilla was awarded a gold medal in the Taste of the Caribbean Culinary Competition in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Anguilla’s Chef Glendon Carty was also voted the Caribbean's Chef of the Year.

When all the pots and pans were put away, Anguilla National Culinary Team took home top medals in every category, beating out much larger islands.It won an amazing six team gold' medals two Individual golds, two Individual silvers and three Individual bronzes.

This is the highest position an Anguillian chef or Anguilla’s national Culianry Team team has ever achieved in the Taste of the Caribbean Competition.

Team Captain Chef Gendon Carty, a 35 year old Anguillian, has been a Chef for over 15 years.

All his training has taken place in Anguilla but he has worked with many internationally acclaimed chefs.

He received his initial training from Vernon Hughes at Cinnamon Reef, and completed a year at ICI Restaurant at Sonesta Hotel.

He has been the executive chef at Ripples Restaurant in Sandy Ground for nine years and also works part time at Cap Juluca.

Carty participated previously in the Taste of the Caribbean Competition in 2004 and in 2007, when he won a silver medal.

He is passionate about the competition and had been instrumental in encouraging a number of young Anguillian chefs.

Pastry chef Colin Yearwood , who works at Cuisinart Resort & Spa, came in second in the individual pastry competition and won a silver medal.

Team chefs Justin Hughes from Cap Juluca & Sirena, and Darren Conner from Cusinart & Da Vida, won silver and bronze medals in the individual chef competitions.

Anguilla also won bronze medals for Chef Dean Samuels team Managers presentation and and special "Most Creative Award" for

Catherine Niles, a bartender at Cap Juluca, who was among the four fianlists for Bartender of the Year.
