They may be perched on the edge of cliffs with beautiful vistas or tucked into a landscape bordered with bougainvillea. Robin Leach made villas a household word, yet many folks still believe you need be rich or famous to vacation in one. But a week in a villa is as affordable as a resort or hotel, and often provides more privacy and flexibility for couples, families and groups of friends traveling together.
In a villa you can cook your own meals or hire a personal chef to cook for you. You can sunbathe au naturale, not worry about waiting in line for a table, and play your own CDs during dinner.
Villas are privately owned, free-standing vacation homes rented by the owners or by a management company. A minimum week stay is usually required, especially during the winter and shoulder seasons. Most vacation villas come equipped with all the amenities of home and range form modest West Indian 'cottages' to elaborate estates with pools, jacuzzis, sophisticated audio visual equipment and private beaches. Many also offer a range of extras such as the use of a jeep, boat and watersports equipment, as well as maid and personal chef and spa services. Nearly all send someone to greet you when you arrive.
There is a villa waiting for you. It's just a matter of finding one to match your vacation style, taste and budget.
